Up to $12,000 in Savings for Territorians

What is the Home and Business Battery Scheme

The Northern Territory Government’s initiative aims to accelerate the transition to renewable energy.

The Home and Business Battery Scheme offers financial support to residents and businesses who want to install a rooftop solar system or upgrade their existing setup with a home battery.

This scheme is part of the Territory’s vision for a sustainable energy future.

Up to $12,000 in Savings for Territorians with the Enhanced Northern Territory Battery Scheme

The Northern Territory Government has significantly increased support for solar and battery solutions with the enhanced Home and Business Battery Scheme. Starting 1 December 2024, eligible homeowners, businesses, and not-for-profit organisations can now access up to $12,000 in grants to make renewable energy more accessible and affordable.

At Photon Energy, based in Alice Springs, we travel up to 1,200 km to deliver high-quality solar and battery installations. With our expertise in serving remote and rural locations, we’re ready to help you take full advantage of this innovative battery rebate.

Key Features of the Updated Scheme

Increased Grant Amount

Eligible applicants can now receive $400 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity, with a maximum rebate of $12,000.

You can use this funding to buy and install:

  • Install a new solar photovoltaic (PV) system with an eligible battery and inverter.
  • Add a battery and inverter to complement your existing solar PV system.

Note: You can’t use the funding to buy and install solar PV panels and inverters where they are not being installed simultaneously with a battery.

Expanded Funding Pool

The NT Government has doubled the funding pool from $3 million to $6 million, ensuring more Territorians can participate and benefit from this initiative.

Enhanced Feed-in Tariff

From 1 July 2025, solar system owners will earn a peak feed-in tariff of 18.66 cents per kilowatt-hour for electricity exported to the grid between 3 pm and 9 pm.

This change could save households an additional $150 per year, making renewable energy even more cost-effective.

The 5 Reasons Behind This Generous NT Battery Rebate

The Northern Territory Government has introduced this enhanced rebate to achieve several key goals:

  1. Lower energy costs for households and businesses

Batteries allow consumers to store excess energy generated by solar PV systems during the day and use it during peak times when electricity rates are higher. Rebates make batteries more affordable, enabling families and businesses to reduce their energy bills.

  1. Enhance energy grid stability

Batteries help stabilise the energy grid by storing surplus renewable energy and releasing it during peak demand periods. This reduces strain on the grid, minimises outages, and helps balance supply and demand more efficiently.

  1. Promote renewable energy adoption

Rebates incentivise the integration of batteries with renewable energy systems like solar PV. This enables households and businesses to maximise their use of renewable energy, accelerating the transition to cleaner energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

  1. Reduce carbon emissions

By encouraging energy storage, governments aim to decrease dependence on gas-fired or coal power plants during high-demand periods. Batteries help optimise renewable energy usage, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing climate change goals.

  1. Support local industries and job creation

Battery rebate programs drive demand for solar and battery installation services, boosting local businesses and creating jobs in the renewable energy sector. This stimulates economic growth while building expertise and capacity in clean energy industries.

Practical Benefits for Territorians

Lower Energy Bills

By storing energy generated during the day, you can reduce reliance on grid electricity during high-cost periods or on cloudy days, leading to significant savings on energy bills.

Improved Energy Grid Stability

Battery systems contribute to a stable and reliable energy grid by reducing peak demand on gas-fired generation and balancing renewable energy supply.

Economic and Environmental Impact

The battery rebate for Alice Springs supports local solar and battery businesses, creating jobs and driving the Northern Territory’s transition to cleaner energy sources. It also helps lower emissions and advances NT’s renewable energy goals.
